This square near the Duomo is a historical center of Milan. Piazza Mercanti stands in surrounding of interesting old buildings which represent Milan culture from Middle Ages up to 17 century.
For example, you can see here medieval Loggia degli Osii which has been built by the order of Duke Matteo Visconti from black and white marble. From the balcony of this building all government edicts had been read out and its façade adorned by the arms of Milan quarters.
Next to it there is Panigarola House which in Gothic times was used as Registration Chamber.
The Palace of Lawyers originates from 1562. It stands near the Tower of Old City Hall which is, may be, the oldest building in Milan.
In front of it there is Palazzo dei Regione. It’s example of baroque architecture in the city. Another one baroque example – is a Palazzo della Scuola which originates from 1645.
If you come closer to the front of the building then you may consider plate and the statues at level of the second storey. These statues portray St Augustin who once taught in the city and Roman poet Ausones who has been exiled to Milan.
Next to it you can find old well of 17th century. It’s very popular place of meeting in Milan.
At the Piazza Mercanti there are two wonderful places where you can have a snack or even a good dinner. The first one is a Café Mercanti and the second – is a Café Martini. In both places is very nice kitchen. But frankly speaking prices are very high too. For example, coffee will cost from 3,5 euro (medium price in Milan – 1 euro).
To recap this small essay about the Piazza Mercanti it’s worth mentioning that in the Middle Ages it was the place where executions was conducting. But don’t worry today Piazza Mercanti is very peaceful place, of course, with a lot of tourists.
