Canal Grande Trieste

Canal Grande in Trieste has been built at the end of 18 century when Trieste was part of Austrian Empire. It had connected sea with the central market square in the city but today big ships do not use it. Canal used by the tourist boats for excursions.

Trieste

Unadvisedly many people neglect the Italian city of Trieste, which is located on the narrow strip of the land between Adriatic sea and the Alps. But it’s very beautiful city, may be not so Italian as neighboring Venice or Verona but definitely with own charm and singularity.

Trieste is a one of the oldest cities in a Europe. Greek colonists founded it over the place of the Illyrian settlement. Its name Trieste derived from the ancient Tergeste, which in turn was given to the city be the Julius Cesar.

In the Middle Ages, after a long war with Venice, people of Trieste asked Austrian Emperor about protection. The request has been accepted and this determined the later fate of the city. Trieste become the main port of Austrian Empire and main connection point of Austria with the rest of the world.

That is why Trieste looks rather like Austrian than Italian city. Modern planning with wide streets city got in the 18-19 centuries when Trieste has been used as base for the military fleet of Austrian Empire.

To be more correct Trieste looks like a big pot where the different cultures were mixed within the centuries.

What differs Triste from the rest of Italian cities – is a space. For example, you will not face here with parking problems. From the other hand, Trieste is a not big city. At least historical center of the city can be explored in few hours if you limited in time.

But better explore city without hustle paying your attention to the wonderful facades which is often adorned by some figures or murals.

I can’t say that in Trieste there are a lot of well-known monuments. But almost every building in the city is beautiful. Even “Coin” store in the city looks like beautiful palace. Or what about of ordinary arch adorned by the head of Roman legionary? Such building you can find almost everywhere in the city.

Btw, a few worlds about of Romans. They left a few vestiges in the oldest part of the Trieste. The Triumph Arch and the Roman Theater which is located on the top of hill which dominates the harbor. May be the remnants of the Roman Theater in Trieste are not as impressive as in Rome but they are very picturesque. And to reach them you will pass through medieval quarters of Trieste with small houses adorned by the vivid flowers.

Another attraction in Trieste is a Miramare castle, which is located north to the city center. This castle is summer residence of Hapsburgs. It was built at the end of the 19 century, preserved its interiors and has a nice English park. But I think I would be better to spend separate day in Miramare.

If you like military architecture, try to find Austrian fortress which is located at the top of the one of the Trieste hills. It originates from the 18 century and has classical for those times star-shapes. Near the castle there is a nice green park where you can have a rest after a walk on the Triest streets.

The Fountain of Four Continents

The Fountain of Four Continents, which adorns main square in Trieste, originates from the middle of the 18 century. It was opened in the 1754 and picks out the idea of Trieste prosperity as free port. Fountain adorned by four statues which depict four known in 18 century continents. Initially the fountain was raised in front of the Town Hall but in 1938 it was relocated to the Orto Lapidario. In 1970 it was returned into its original place.

Piazza Unita d’Italia

Piazza Unita d’Italia in Trieste is a big city’s “sitting room”. When I visited the city it was the place from where I started explore the city. Here there is a lot of parking place. Even in the working days be sure that you easily find the space for your car.

Piazza Unita d’Italia is treated as the biggest square in Europe, which is located near the sea. It’s located over the place where once was the ancient harbor of Trieste (which has been filled with sand in the 19 century) plus Piazza occupies the place where previously was the Piazza San Pietro and Piazza Grande.

Its current name Piazza got after 1918 when the Trieste as free town has been joint to the Italy.

At the beginning of 21 century Piazza Unita d’Italy has been completely renovated. I personally has been impressed by lamp posts which adorn Piazza. As I understood the devoted to Italian heroes which were fallen on the fields of the World War First .

Another noticeable monument of Piazza is a building of Austrian Lieutenancy which is now the seat of city’s Prefecture. Once this building has been adorned by frescoes with Austrian coat of arms but after the Trieste become the part of Italy they were substituted to the frescoes which depict the coat of arms of Savoy dynasty. The towers of the Town Hall adorned by the two statues Mikeza and Jakeze. Frankly speaking I don’t know what their names mean. Another palaces of Piazza are: Palazzo Vanoli, Palazzo Piettere and the Palace of the Austrian Lloyd company.

Palazzo della ragione located at the historical center of the Padua. In the Middle Ages palace has been used as city hall and today it’s often called The Salone. Building was built between 13 and 14 centuries in the Gothic style.

Palazzo della ragione in Padua contains frescos by Giotto which were completed in 1420. They depict astrological scenes. Another masterpiece which you can see inside of the palace is a copy of horse by Donatello.

Ground floor of the palace has arcades under which there are a lot of food shops and cafes. Next to the palace there is a market where you can buy a lot of things.

Palmanova village

Palmanova village outlet was built in Venetian style. It’s located between the Trieste and Udine and very popular among the tourists from the central and eastern Europe. Outlet has approximately 90 stores of popular brands which propose to visitors 30-70% discounts.

Those who don’t like the shopping can spend their time in some café or entertainment center while their spouse will discover shops.

Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio

This church located to the west of the Duomo in the area which once was the center of Milan. The has been founded in 379 and it’s one of the oldest survived churches of Italy. It’s named after the first Milan bishop who was buried in the church’s crypt.

In the medieval times Sant’Ambrogio could hold all city’s population. Imagine how small Milan was in those times. In the moments of dangers all Milanese were sheltering here.

Inside of the church you can find a lot of interesting artifacts. For example, roman times columns, mosaics and murals. The second chapel of the church has frescoes by Tiepolo.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II was built in 1877 and so far, it’s treated as the best shopping mall in the world. It’s not a cheap place and places there are reserved only for most prestigious and luxurious brands. I can event say that the galleria is a big lobby of the city. Milanese and city’s guests prowl here exposing themselves and looking for the new acquaintances.

Note the mosaics, which adorn the floor of the Galleria. They depict the symbols of the different Italian regions. And there is a legend related with the bull (as I remember the symbol of the Florence). If you turn three times on your left heel, your dreams will happen.
