La Rambla

What is La Rambla (Las Ramblas) in Barcelona? This is the central tourist boulevard in the city which is popular not only among the sightseers but also among the local citizens who like to flaunt here one before another.

So before your walk to La Rambla make sure that your attire is good enough to catch the mind of another people.

La Rambla is a pedestrian zone, with a lot of trees on both sides, which stretches on the 1,2 kilometers between the Placa de Catalunya and the Old Port.

La Rambla is a place where you can meet artists, mimes, actors, musicians and street sellers. Every day here is unique aura, which is the envy of any other boulevard in the world.

In the Middle Ages instead of La Rambla were the city walls. With the time, when Barcelona grew, was decided to demolish the old walls and build instead of them wide boulevard, in the way how it was popular in the France. The local citizens met this idea with big enthusiasm and new developed boulevard quickly became very popular among them.

For the end of the 18 century (it’s the time when it all happened) the La Rambla was a real attraction. Most of the city’s streets were narrow and people liked to go through La Rambla. As we like to do it in now days.

La Rambla can be seen as a one big boulevard but in real it consists from the five different paths. I’m not sure that is possible to discern them. Especially if you are not a local citizen. But they exist. Rambla de Canale̒tes, Rambla dels Estudis, Rambla de Santa Mo̒nica, Rambla dels Caputxins, Rambla de Santa Mo̒nica – is all the parts of La Rambla. Sometimes the pedestrian bridge which was built before the Olympic Games in 1992 is relegated to the La Rambla.

The symbolic beginning of LaRambla – is cast-iron fountain which is located in few meters from Place de Catalonya. This fountain is popular among the football fans of Barcelona who gather here after the games. I’m not sure whether they do it after mishaps but they always do it after successes of their favorite team. And of course their favorite team – is Barcelona FC.

Also there is a legend about the fountain which claims that those guests of the city who will drink from the fountain inevitably will come back here. You can find a lot of interesting buildings at the La Rambla. For example, the Royal Academy of the Arts, which was built in the 18 century. And of course here you can meet a lot of Modern Buildings, the style which is so popular in the city. For those, who don’t know I remind that Barcelona counted as a birthplace of the Modern.

If you are Gaudi fan then don’t miss the Royal Square. There you can find the earliest work of the Gaudi – the lamps.

From the others buildings at La Rambla let me mention the Palace of the Vice-King which was built in the 1775. This is good example of the Rocco in Spain. In 1941 the building was declared the National Monument of History and Art. And the pride of La Rambla – is the market Boqueria. Is the best market in the Barcelona. Even if you don’t need anything to buy visit this place and enjoy its atmosphere. But if you need something then you can find it here.

Also if you already been in Spain you can say that there almost every city has boulevard called La Rambla. It’s true. But La Rambla in Barcelona is a special place. So when we say La Rambla we mean La Rambla in Barcelona.
